McCormick, Senate Candidate, Denies Misleading Voters on Wealth

Article Summary –

Pennsylvania Republican U.S. Senate candidate Dave McCormick is facing allegations of lying about his early life and financial beginnings. Reports have contradicted McCormick’s claims of growing up poor on a family farm, citing his parents’ decent professional careers and his recent earnings as a hedge fund manager, which exceeded $22 million in 2022. McCormick has also been criticized for claiming to be a “Pennsylvania job creator and a business leader”, despite his firm reportedly eliminating jobs after receiving state funds meant for hiring.

Scathing report on Pennsylvania Republican Senate Candidate Dave McCormick

The New York Times on April 19 published a report contradicting US Senate candidate Dave McCormick’s claims of an impoverished background on a family farm. The Pennsylvania Republican has retaliated by accusing the newspaper of deceit and misrepresentation of his previous statements.

McCormick, who is contesting incumbent Democratic Sen. Bob Casey in the November election, addressed the report on the “This Week in Pennsylvania” program on WHTM. He clarified that his beginnings were modest, and he earned what he has through his hard work, not poverty.

On April 19, McCormick tweeted, accusing the Times of misrepresenting his childhood in their report. He claimed the Times is a partisan publication trying to bolster Casey’s re-election.

However, during his 2022 Senate campaign, McCormick acknowledged his good fortune and hard work to talk-show host Hugh Hewitt. He conveyed a similar message to KDKA, a Pittsburgh television station, stating: “I’ve been very fortunate. I started my life and grew up in Pennsylvania in Bloomsburg, and I didn’t have anything.”

McCormick, who earned over $22 million running Bridgewater Associates in 2022, campaigns on a plan to make the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act permanent. This law could save him hundreds of thousands of dollars annually by reducing tax rates for the wealthy.

He opposes President Biden’s 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, which has slashed healthcare and clean energy costs for consumers.

McCormick has also faced accusations of exaggerating his role as a job creator in Pennsylvania. A HuffPost report revealed that his firm eliminated jobs even after obtaining state funds to increase hiring.

Despite his campaign site claiming he has always stood up to China, McCormick admitted in 2023 that his firm had a significant investment in China. In April, Bloomberg exposed that the fund invested in Chinese military manufacturing businesses.
