Giuliani Disbarred Over False 2020 Election Claims

Article Summary –

Rudy Giuliani, former New York City mayor and legal adviser to Donald Trump, was disbarred in New York after a court found he repeatedly made false statements regarding Trump’s 2020 election loss. The Manhattan appeals court ruled that Giuliani “flagrantly misused” his position by making baseless claims that undermined the integrity of the electoral process, further contributing to national strife post-election. Facing additional legal troubles, including possible disbarment in Washington and criminal charges in Georgia and Arizona, Giuliani continues to dispute these findings, claiming the decision is politically motivated and plans to appeal.

NEW YORK (AP) — Rudy Giuliani, former NYC mayor and legal adviser to Trump, was disbarred in New York after a court found he made repeated false statements about Trump’s 2020 election loss.

The Manhattan appeals court ruled Giuliani, who had his NY law license suspended in 2021, can no longer practice law in the state, effective immediately.

“The seriousness of respondent’s misconduct cannot be overstated,” the decision reads, adding Giuliani “flagrantly misused” his position and “baselessly attacked” the integrity of the electoral process.

Giuliani said he wasn’t surprised, claiming on social media platform X that the case was “based on an activist complaint.”

Admitted to the NY bar in 1969, Giuliani hadn’t appeared in court as an attorney since 1992, before pleading Trump’s case in 2020.

Ted Goodman, Giuliani’s spokesperson, said Giuliani will appeal the “objectively flawed” decision and called on the legal community to speak out. His attorney, Arthur Aidala, described the legal team as “disappointed” but not surprised.

Giuliani argued in October hearings that he believed the claims he made for Trump’s campaign were true, but the court wasn’t convinced.

The court found Giuliani “falsely and dishonestly” claimed thousands of votes were cast in the names of dead people and that people were brought from Camden, NJ to vote illegally in Philadelphia.

In May, WABC radio suspended Giuliani and canceled his talk show for his false claims about the 2020 election. He is also facing the possibility of losing his law license in Washington.

Giuliani filed for bankruptcy after being ordered to pay $148 million in damages to two former Georgia election workers.

He asked a federal judge to convert his bankruptcy case to a liquidation, meaning most assets would be sold to pay creditors. Giuliani faces criminal charges in Georgia and Arizona over his role in the 2020 election reversal efforts, pleading not guilty in both cases.

He’s charged in Georgia with making false statements and soliciting false testimony. The Arizona indictment accuses him of pressuring officials to change election results.

Giuliani built his public persona as a federal prosecutor in the 1980s, targeting mobsters and powerbrokers. The law-and-order reputation helped him govern NYC during high crime times and earned accolades for his leadership after the 9/11 attacks.

After unsuccessful Senate and presidential runs, and a career as a consultant, Giuliani became a top Trump defender, promoting election fraud claims after the 2020 vote, including a press conference outside Four Seasons Total Landscaping.

Lies around the election results fueled the mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 to stop Biden’s victory certification.
