Michigan Governor Announces Major Road and Bridge Repair Projects

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer progresses in her initiative to refurbish and upgrade Michigan’s transportation infrastructure. On April 29, she publicized that the Michigan Department of Transportation would kick off significant road and bridge repair projects across five counties.

Details of Infrastructure Upgrades

The projects encompass overpass repairs on Interstate 75 in Chippewa County, bridge fixes on Michigan state Route 6 and I-96 in Kent County and I-475 in Genesee County, road paving on state Route 45 in Saginaw County, and road repairs on state Route 39 in Wayne County. The projects, amounting to nearly $170 million, are expected to generate more than 2,000 jobs.

Whitmer stated, “We are fixing the roads to boost economic activity, aid Michiganders in their daily commute, and ensure safety. By the end of this construction season, we will have mended nearly 23,000 lane miles and 1,600 bridges, supporting 89,000 jobs without raising taxes by a cent.”

Funding and Timeline for the Projects

The projects are backed by Whitmer’s Rebuilding Michigan plan and the bipartisan Building Michigan Together Plan. Some projects also receive federal funding. The timeline for completion varies, with the larger Genesee County project, worth $141 million, set to be completed by May 12.

Senator Gary Peters asserted, “These projects will enhance road safety, support local businesses, create good-paying jobs, and make a significant impact in our communities with the help of federal investments.”

Expected Outcome of Infrastructure Projects

By the conclusion of this construction season, Michigan plans to have repaired nearly 23,000 lane miles and 1,600 bridges. The governor’s office anticipates these upgrades will facilitate safer road conditions, travel, and boost the economy.
